On the morning of September 13th, Mr. Shao Yaliang, President of SIG, held a meeting with Mr. Brian Mulroney, former Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. Rick Savone, Consulate General of Canada in Shanghai, Mr. Norm Steinberg, Chairman of Norton Rose group and other delegation members. Both parties friendly exchanged views on Sino-Canada commercial and trade cooperation.
At the first, Mr. Shao Yaliang expressed welcome to the visiting by Mr. Brian Mulroney and his delegation. He introduced that Shanghai International Group (SIG) is authorized by Shanghai Municipal Government and is positioned as an investment holding company with strategic shareholdings mainly in financial sector, and that its businesses cover six segments, including banking & trust, securities & fund management, asset management, financial services & insurance, overseas business, and industrial investment. SIG is the biggest shareholder of Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, Shanghai Rural Commercial Bank, Guotai Junan Securities, Dazhong Insurance, Anxin Agricultural Insurance, Shanghai Equity Exchange etc. In recent years, SIG has played a leading role in launching and setting up Sailing International Investment Fund, Shanghai Financial Development Investment Fund, Shanghai Guohe Modern Service Industry Equity Investment Fund, Shanghai Real Power Emerging Industry Parallel Fund ( RMB and US Dollar), and participated in launching and setting up Shanghai Shipping Fund. In the past many years, SIG has provided consummate investment, financing and financial advisory services to many significant construction projects in Shanghai through its rich experience in finance and capital management, actively promoting Shanghai’s modernization and internationalization. As of the end of 2011, the consolidated total assets of SIG was 111.578 billion RMB and asset under management added up to 910.2 billion RMB.
Mr. Brian Mulroney expressed his thankfulness to Mr. Shao Yaliang’s introduction. Mr. Brian Mulroney had been Prime Minister of Canada for nine years and now is senior partner of Norton Rose group. He said not only in office but also after relinquishing, he stays committed to Sino-Canada friendship building. Norton Rose Group is a leading international law firm, with 43 offices and 3000 lawyers globally, having rich experience in finance, energy, infrastructure construction, technology, etc and providing all-round commercial legal services to global clients. Mr. Brian Mulroney added that hopefully, Norton Rose Group and SIG will have further exchange and cooperation in the future and Norton Rose Group will actively provide professional services and support to business activities and trade between China and Canada.
